Description
The giants and monsters were among the first born, before Zeus himself, and were even older than the Titans. They weren't really gods, but were considered supernatural beings, somewhere between man and gods, I guess.
This statue (and others like it) mark the entrance to the Palace of the Giants. If you go there, you will see many layers of building over the original palace, into a Greek gym, and eventually a Roman gym. None of them are standing now, but the statues (parts of them) remain.

This is a truly magnificient sight. i think it would be intimidating in person. And when i think about the craftsmanship that went into one of these, it makes me both happy and sad....
Happy because it has lasted for so very long...long enough for us to be able to see it, perhaps touch it, and gain some inspiration from it.
...And sad because so few, now, actually have enough pride in this kind of work to take the time to make their own perfect or to really enjoy and value a work such as this. Most have little or no concept of what goes into a work of art and its creation.
